Born on 21 March 1906 in Greenville, Delaware, James Harrison Wilson ‘Jim’ Thompson was an American businessman and architect who would become forever known as the ‘Silk King’ of Thailand. His life became inextricably linked with the fortunes of Southeast Asia, achieving legendary status for almost single-handedly reviving the Thai silk industry and founding the company that bears his name—a luxury enterprise that continues to thrive to this day. Yet, the story of the Silk King is ultimately eclipsed by the profound and enduring mystery of his inexplicable disappearance while on a supposed stroll in the Cameron Highlands on 26 March 1967.
Accounts of that fateful day describe Thompson holidaying at the Moonlight Bungalow with friends. After attending an Easter Sunday service and a picnic lunch, the party returned to the bungalow for an afternoon siesta. What transpired in the ensuing hours remains unknown. When Thompson failed to appear for tea, a search began. His bed was undisturbed; a jacket lay upon a chair, a cup of tea sat on the table, and a half-smoked cigar rested against an ashtray. Though an afternoon stroll would have been characteristic of an ardent lover of the outdoors, Jim Thompson never returned.
