AN ENCHANTING RETREAT

Nestled in a ‘little piece of England in Asia’

ABOUT JIM THOMPSON

Born on 21 March 1906 in Greenville, Delaware, James Harrison Wilson “Jim” Thompson was an American businessman and architect who became known as the ‘Silk King’ of Thailand. He revitalised the Thai silk industry and founded the luxury company that bears his name. Yet his remarkable legacy is forever shadowed by his mysterious disappearance on 26 March 1967, when he vanished during a supposed afternoon stroll in the Cameron Highlands. His fate remains one of the world’s most enduring unsolved mysteries.

A LITTLE PIECE OF ENGLAND IN ASIA

The Cameron Highlands take their name from a discovery that was almost lost to time. In 1885, British government surveyor William Cameron first chanced upon these mist-clad uplands during a mapping expedition, yet he neglected to chart his find properly. It fell to Sir George Maxwell, some forty years later in 1925, to officially record Cameron’s discovery and develop the area as a hill station. It quickly became a haven for British colonials and expatriates, including the pioneering planters who recognised the unique potential of its fertile slopes for cultivating tea.

Perched 1,500 metres above sea level within a forested mountain landscape, Cameron Highlands Resort has been thoughtfully built as a long extension from an original 1930s cottage, with architecture characteristic of the 1970s. Affectionately regarded as ‘a little piece of England in Asia,’ the cool climate of this picturesque plateau and its rolling green hills are tailor-made for leisurely rounds of golf, brisk rambles along jungle trails, visits to tea plantations and farms, or a proper afternoon tea with scones and clotted cream. With its elegant interiors, lush surroundings, and five-star care, the resort sets the tone for the perfect highland getaway—steeped in Trails, Tales, and Traditions.

TALES OF THE HIGHLANDS

By Choong Chi-ying

In the mist-shrouded hills of Cameron Highlands, author Choong Chi-ying discovered the perfect canvas for her book, The Tales of the Highlands. The Penang-born, UK-based writer drew deeply from the magical realism of García Márquez, transforming the region’s ethereal beauty into a realm where folklore and fantasy breathe new life.

To ground her narratives in authenticity, Choong immersed herself fully—interviewing naturalists, trekking jungle trails, and delving into regional lore, including the enduring mystery of Jim Thompson. The result is a collection where reality and imagination blur, much like the highlands’ own shifting mists.
